Colliers

The town of Colliers [incorporated in 1972] is located between Marysvale and Conception Harbour on the Admirals' Coast. According to the 2006 census, it has a population of 722.

Colliers is surrounded by steep hills and beautiful coastal scenery interspersed with harbours and inlet with frequent sand and pebble beaches. There is a small island in the harbour which is called Tinomin's Island. The beaches offer ideal sites for kayaking and scuba diving. Residents and visitors enjoy berry picking, hiking on the Colliers Hiking Trail, trouting in the Colliers River, and photography of seascapes and landscapes.

Immaculate Conception Church

The present Immaculate Conception Church is a relatively new structure. It was built between April and September of 1954. The previous winter, men from Colliers went into the woods at Salmonier Line to cut logs for the church. They provided their labour free of charge. Women in the parish also organized garden parties and socials to raise funds for the construction. The first mass in the new church was celebrated on September 12, 1954. When Father O’Neill, the parish priest, died on April 7, 1956, all the parish bills related to the new church were paid. A shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima was erected outside the church in memory of Father O’Neill. (The shrine can be seen in the far left of the photo.)

Annual Events in Colliers

Three major events are held in Colliers each year: the Immaculate Conception Parish Garden Party, the Colliers Folk Festival, and the Immaculate Conception Parish Fall Fair.
