Markland Cottage Winery
Markland,
just beyond Whitbourne on Route 81, is an small inland community. It is approximately 50 miles west of St. John’s. Markland was established in 1934 as a farming community as part of a plan by the Commission of Government to create a number of farming communities. While the settlers cleared land, and built houses and public buildings such as a school, the government provided provisions, tools and construction material. The name Markland was chosen from the word for “forest land” in the Norse sagas.
