New Perlican

New Perlican, like many towns on the Baccalieu Trail, was first mentioned by John Guy's colonists in the early 1600s. Thomas Rowley, one of the colonists, wrote a letter to Sir Percival Willoughby telling him that he planned to settle in New Perlican in 1620. He said that the fishing in New Perlican was “as good as any in the land”. He said that once he was settled he would make his living by fishing, farming and trading with the Beothuk. Although we do not know if he actually went, we do know from a census that there were two planters living in New Perlican in 1675.

In the 1697, Abbé Baudoin, the priest who accompanied the French forces of Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville when they attacked the English settlements, said: “This harbour of New Perlican is very nice, big ships can enter it. There are nine inhabitants and quantities of cattle.”

Archaeology in New Perlican

The Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corporation has been conducting digs in New Perlican since 2001. Over 12,300 artifacts have been recovered from the Hefford Plantation, many dating to the last quarter of the 17th century. A selection of artifacts are displayed at the Fred Grant Memorial Building which is open from June to September from 8:30am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday. Call 583-2016 for more information.

New Perlican Today

On July 12, 2008, there will be a Heritage Day at Community Centre. Activities will include a flea market, bake sale, tea, contests and other fun heritage related events.

The town of New Perlican, retains its history. Scattered throughout the community are saltbox houses, many of which are over 100 years old.

The town has a number of walking and hiking trails which connect it to nearby towns such as Heart's Content and Winterton. The Shoreline Trail leads to " Bloody Point," thought to be the site of a battle between the English settlers and the French. The rocks are supposed to have been stained red with the blood of those who died.
