Victoria, Conception Bay

The Town of Victoria probably began as a "winterhouse" for people from Freshwater and Carbonear. It was noted that the area was being used for wood cutting in 1817. Gradually people built more permanent dwellings along the road between Carbonear and Heart's Content and around Beaver Pond. Documents indicate that Nicholas Powell was granted land along the Heart's Content Road in 1859. The settlement was named in honour of Queen Victoria and was known in the nineteenth century as Victoria Village.

Picnic Site

The Victoria Heritage Society supports a stable - sanctuary for the Newfoundland pony in Victoria which has been in operation since 1999 to maintain the species for future generations. On display is some of the equipment that was used with the pony to persecute the farming, forestry and fishing industry over the past 300 years.

Newfoundland Power Hydro Electrical Museum, constructed in 1904, was the only electrical power source serving Conception Bay North and Heart's Content. At present it houses the original turbines and equipment from the periods of 1904,1907, and 1914.

A reconstructed replica Water Powered Sawmill is located near the museum. The sawmill is a tribute to the ingenuity of past generations.

Lifestyle Museum contains a Blacksmith's hob and bellows. On display there are artifacts depicting tools used for shoeing horses and making routine repairs to wagon wheels. In the cooperage there are artifacts depicting tools used in manufacturing herring and slack barrels. These barrels were the only means of storing and transporting wet and dry goods until the 1950's.
