Digital Mapping Workshop in Whiteway
On October 22nd, Dana March and Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corridor Project with Natalie Falk, Executive Director of the Association of Heritage Industries, held a Digital Mapping Workshop at Brown's Restaurant in Whiteway. During the event, Stephen Engle of The Quebec Labrador Foundation (Centre for Community GIS) presented GIS maps and data bases of the region that had been developed over the summer. Workshop participants were then given an opportunity to examine the work for errors and omissions, and present their findings. After lunch there were three sessions. Kathi Stacey of Destination St. John's lead a group discussion entitled: "Who is the visitor?" During the discussion, each participant attempted to describe the typical Baccalieu Trail tourist in terms of demographics and interests. Dennis Minty of Dennis Minty Photography and Avalonia Guest Homes described nature photography and hiking workshops that he has been conducting. He pointed out the benefits of selling packaged tours developed in partnership with other operators. His product is geared toward nature photographers; however, there is potential for many other types of packages. To end the day, Kathi asked each table to develop a slogan for the Baccalieu Trail which can be used to market the region.

Keeping Newfoundland Irish Traditions Alive.
On October 14th, the Baccalieu Trail Tourism Association sponsored an all day workshop "Keeping Newfoundland Irish Traditions ALIVE! Connecting Our Irish Roots." featuring Irish Artists Michael Fortune & Aileen Lambert Bios - MS Word > > at the SUF Lodge in Bay Roberts. The event, which was attended by Barry Snow, Executive Director of Ireland Business Partnerships and Ray Johnson of Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers, focused on observing the methods used by Michael and Aileen to preserve Irish culture, determining the similarities between Irish and Baccalieu Trail culture, and determining how their methods could be applied in the Baccalieu Trail region to preserve traditional culture. Most people in attendance were amazed at the many similarities between the two cultures, in terms of traditions and language; especially in this region, where Irish heritage has not been highlighted in the past. Fairy stories were one large area of commonality. Another was use of language. Michael and Aileen were intrigued by the legend of the Irish Princess, Sheila NaGeira and the Pirate, Peter Easton, which they had never heard before. Further account of the workshop with photos > >

Fall is a perfect time to visit the Northern Avalon. There are fewer tourists around and rates are often lower. All different types of berries are ripe for picking or eating in restaurants. The leaves are changing colour, the harvest moon is out, and berry picking, hunting and fishing are favourite activities.
Lloyd Rees and Barry C. Parsons - two of the photographers who have contributed many pictures to the Northern Avalon Website have their own Blogs. Both are worth a number of visits - they both update frequently and one visit will only scratch the surface!
Lloyd's main blog consists of photographs of Newfoundland and Labrador - http://lloydsnfldpics.blogspot.com/
Barry's Blog consists of recipes with photographs - http://www.rockrecipes.blogspot.com/
As a follow up to the visit Dr. Elizabeth Miller, daughter of well-known Newfoundland writer and humourist,
Ted Russell, to the town of Bay Roberts, the town has released information about the
Pigeon Inlet Project.
